Household Goods
Documents
Documents required for importing used household goods, personal effects, and related shipments.
Note: Do not include insurance certificates or any other documents showing the value of household goods in the shipment. Documents indicating declared values can trigger the assessment of heavy import duties.
- Copy of passport
- Copy of visa (foreigners and diplomats)
- Copy of diplomatic card or confirmation of employment
- Airway Bill, CMR, or SMGS (as applicable)
- Shipping invoice
- Detailed packing list
- Power of Attorney (sample provided by the destination agent in Tajikistan)
- Export Customs Declaration from the country of origin

Specific Information
Foreign nationals coming to Tajikistan to execute projects or contracts must arrive on employment visas. Household goods accompanying or following an employment visa holder may qualify for duty-free entry under the preferential customs procedure for private individuals.
Under Tajikistan's preferential customs procedure, goods not intended for business activities are admitted with complete exemption from customs duties when: the total declared customs value does not exceed USD 1,000 in equivalent terms, and the total weight does not exceed 50 kilograms per person. For shipments exceeding either the USD 1,000 value threshold or the 50 kg weight threshold, the general customs clearance procedure and payment of customs duties and taxes applies.
All wood packaging materials (crates, pallets, lift vans) must be fumigated. ISPM 15-compliant fumigation with either methyl bromide or heat treatment is required; the appropriate ISPM 15 mark must be affixed.

Importing a Used Personal Vehicle
Required Documents
- Copy of passport
- Copy of visa (foreigners)
- Copy of diplomatic card or confirmation of employment
- Airway Bill, CMR, or SMGS
- Shipping invoice
- Power of Attorney (sample provided by the destination agent in Tajikistan)
- Copy of vehicle registration certificate

Specific Information
As of August 2, 2023 (Government Decree No. 355), the importation of motor vehicles manufactured before 2013 is prohibited. This applies to HS Codes 8702, 8703, 8704, and 8705 — covering passenger vehicles, goods vehicles, and special purpose motor vehicles. All vehicles must be 2013 model year or newer.
Temporary importation of motor vehicles and motorcycles registered in foreign countries is permitted for a maximum of 60 days under Government Decree No. 373 (June 23, 2020). Temporary import is for personal, family, and other non-business use only.
Permanent import of vehicles is subject to the general customs clearance procedure and applicable customs duties and taxes. Contact the destination agent for current duty rates before booking.
Pets
- International veterinary passport
- Official health certificate endorsed by the veterinary authority at origin, issued within 10 days of departure
- Rabies vaccination record and certificate
- ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip (recommended; not formally mandatory, but strongly advised)
- Power of Attorney (sample provided by the destination agent)
No quarantine is imposed if all requirements are met. Pets not meeting import requirements will be quarantined, returned, or euthanized at the owner's expense.
Tajikistan is classified as a high-rabies-risk country. A current rabies vaccination is required. A rabies titer test is not currently required by Tajikistan but is strongly recommended if the pet will subsequently return to a country that requires it.
ISO-compliant microchipping is strongly recommended even though it is not formally required, as it ties the pet to its documentation.
Contact the destination agent before shipping any pet to Tajikistan to confirm current requirements and arrange any necessary pre-clearance.
Consignment Instructions
Contact the destination agent to ensure all requirements have been met prior to import, especially for differences between air, road, and rail shipments.
Do not include insurance certificates or other documents indicating the value of household goods in the shipment — this can trigger substantial additional duties. The Power of Attorney required for customs clearance must match the sample format provided by the destination agent in Tajikistan.
All wood packing materials must be fumigated and carry the ISPM 15 mark.
For motor vehicles, confirm the vehicle's year of manufacture complies with the post-2012 requirement before booking. Contact the destination agent to confirm current duty rates and clearance procedures before any shipment is arranged.
Cultural & Other Information
Tajikistan — officially the Republic of Tajikistan — is a landlocked country in Central Asia bordered by Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. It has a population of approximately 10 million. The capital and largest city is Dushanbe. Tajik is the official language; Russian is widely used in government and commerce. The currency is the Tajikistani Somoni (TJS).
Tajikistan is the smallest country in Central Asia by area and the poorest in the former Soviet Union by GDP per capita. The economy relies heavily on remittances, aluminium production, and cotton. Political stability has improved since the civil war of the 1990s, though the country remains an authoritarian state. The terrain is highly mountainous — over 90% of the country is covered by mountains, including parts of the Pamir range.
