E-Commerce giant Amazon has launched a new service offering to provide logistics services to any company, unconnected to their marketplace.

In a move that reflects the success of Amazon Web Services, Amazon Supply Chain Services will leverage the company’s network of over 200 U.S. fulfillment centers, 80,000 trailers, 24,000 intermodal containers and 100-plus aircraft to provide full-truckload, less-than-truckload and intermodal transport. The service will also include 2-to-5-day parcel shipping and inbound shipping from China to the United States with customs clearance.

“Amazon is bringing the infrastructure, intelligence, and scale of its supply chain services, proven over decades, to businesses everywhere, much like Amazon Web Services did for cloud computing,” said Peter Larsen, VP of Amazon Supply Chain Services, in the release. Amazon delivers over 13 billion items annually with a 96.4% average on-time delivery rate.

IAM Member Impact: As members see increasing demand for smaller household goods shipments, it is likely that moving companies will increasingly turn to third party providers for transport solutions and potentially delivery solutions.
