ArcBest Corporation, the owner of U-Pack in the household goods moving market, has announced a restructuring plan that consolidates three of its asset-light brands under the single ArcBest name.

The plan also includes a roughly 2% reduction in ArcBest’s workforce (about 300 positions) and the closure of 10 ABF Freight service centers in smaller markets, consolidating operations into nearby locations. The U-Pack household goods moving brand is unchanged and will continue operating as-is, alongside ABF Freight, which remains the company’s LTL carrier brand.

U-Pack performance remains soft, but management sees stabilization. On ArcBest’s Q1 2026 earnings call, management said U-Pack remains pressured by the high-interest-rate environment and a soft housing market, which has resulted in fewer household goods moves. That said, executives noted a more constructive near-term picture: Demand trends have stabilized, April tonnage is tracking with normal seasonality, and broader industry supply rationalization through carrier exits and aging fleets is positioning ArcBest to capture demand once the market inflects.

IAM Member Impact: U-Pack relies on ABF Freight’s linehaul network to move household goods shipments, so the terminal consolidations are worth watching for any impact on transit times or capacity in affected smaller markets.
