The Australian Trucking Association is requesting the country’s government to maintain current fuel tax relief measures for trucks until at least the end of August.
Mathew Munro, chief executive officer at Australia’s leading national body representing the trucking and road freight transport industry, said that the relief measures implemented since the conflict in the Middle East began had saved many businesses and that keeping the road user charge at its current rate, AU$0.164 per liter, rather than increasing it to 32.4 cents per liter on Aug. 3 would continue that support.
“Trucking was already in a precarious position before the war, and it is clear that the crisis isn’t over,” said Munro. “Diesel prices are rising again. The average terminal gate price of diesel is now more than 200 cents per litre in every capital city. We urge the Government to keep the road user charge at its present level until 31 August, with a review in late August to decide if the discount should be extended further.”
