The new Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor in Canada and Detroit in the United States is set to open on July 27 after its original launch was blocked by the Trump administration.
The new opening date follows discussions between the Canadian and American governments on revenue-sharing from the bridge, which was funded by Canada and is jointly owned by Canada and Michigan. Financing of the bridge building became a contentious issue after the owners of the existing Ambassador Bridge, who also own a trucking company, successfully lobbied the state of Michigan not to contribute to construction.
At 1.5 miles (2.5 km), the Gordie Howe International Bridge will become one of the top five longest bridges in North America, with three lanes in each direction. With a clear span of 0.53 miles (853 meters), the bridge will be the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge on the continent.
