People born in India have become the largest migrant group in Australia, overtaking the English for the first time.
Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) highlighted that at least 971,020 people born in India were living in the country as of June 30, 2025, slightly more than the 970,950 people born in England. Chinese-born people totaled 732,000 in third place, followed by 638,000 from New Zealand. Overall, Australia had 8.8 million overseas-born residents in 2025, which made up about 32% of the country’s population of 27.6 million.
While migration has long been at the center of the country’s economic growth, more recently there has been an increasing pushback against immigration amid a significant housing shortage in Australia.
