As the situation in the Middle East remains disrupted, moving companies, carriers and regional logistics providers are becoming more organized around contingency routing.

IAM’s Core Members Management Board representatives for the Middle East, Ankit Bhalla and Shankar Ram, reported that the Strait of Hormuz remains the central issue with reports of vessel incidents, including a ship being seized off the UAE and another cargo vessel being attacked near Oman. This has reinforced the view that carriers and insurers will not quickly return to normal operations anytime soon.

As many movers in the region regain some confidence around alternative routing, exports that were largely paused or delayed are now being planned through ports in neighboring countries. “The situation remains costly and heavily dependent on regional security developments,” said Ankit Bhalla and Shankar Ram.

IAM Member Impact: Members with shipments to or from the region should continue to validate whether the shipping line is accepting the specific origin/destination and routing, whether a shipment is moving through a contingency port, whether any additional surcharges are included or charged separately, and whether any cross-border movement is required and who is responsible for arranging it.
