A new pilot program launched by the State Department in the United States will allow tourists and business travelers to “move to the front of the appointment line” for visa interviews.
Effective July 1, travelers applying for B-1 and B-2 non-immigrant visas for business and tourism will be able to pay a US$750 fee in addition to the standard US$185 application processing fee to jump ahead of others for visa interviews. Paying the extra fee will mean that visa applicants will secure a visa interview appointment within 10 business days, instead of waiting for the next available opening. Current reported waiting times include over 12 months for a B-1/B-2 visa interview appointment in Abu Dhabi, but less than half a month in Istanbul.
The State Department highlighted that the “premium” addition will be optional, limited in quantity, and only available at posts specified on its website. “This service will not expedite any processing steps, including any time needed for administrative processing,” it stated. The pilot period will end on Dec. 31, 2026, at which point the State Department will assess whether the service is worth continuing or adjusting.
IAM Member Impact: Members seeking a U.S. B-1 business visitor visa that covers activities like attending meetings and conferences may want to take advantage of the pilot program if it is available in their country.
