Moving companies are among the transport industry those facing severe disruption to operations this week as winter storm “Fern” brought ice, snow, and dangerous temperatures to many regions of the United States over the weekend.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the storm affected almost 200 million people resulting in nearly 12,000 flight cancellations and disrupting logistics operations. Very cold temperatures are expected to continue for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service. The storm led FedEx to activate contingency plans at its Memphis and Indianapolis hubs and warned of potential delivery delays. Multi-vehicle pileups were reported across many states and Pennsylvania banned all commercial motor vehicles from interstates.
In an update to IAM, Susan Staszewski of IAMTrusted National Van Lines said that the nationwide moving company was tracking multiple closures in multiple closures in Connecticut, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas.
